Developing personal connections between Darfuri and American students to promote mutual understanding is an important part of the DDT mission.
Darfur Dream Team Social Network
In 2011, we launched a secure online social network on which U.S. schools can exchange photos, videos and written messages with their Darfuri peers. DDT partner organization i-ACT has created a “CommKit” to allow the Darfuri refugees to access the social network; a CommKit includes a set of rugged solar chargers, a laptop computer, cameras, and a satellite modem. Students and teachers in Djabal and Goz Amer refugee camps have been trained on how to use the CommKit and social network to connect with their American sister schools.
Still in the testing phase, we're working with a small group of participating U.S. schools to normalize usage of the social network and improve our satellite communications. Throughout 2012 we hope to expand the social network to connect all actively participating U.S. schools with their Darfuri sister schools.
Trips to the Refugee Camps
A few times a year Enough and i-ACT staff members travel to the refugee camps. During these trips we meet with camp leaders, students, teachers, parents and UNHCR staff, work on and replace the CommKit equipment, train additional refugee students and teachers, and carry out monitoring and evaluation of implemented DDT funds.
During these trips we also offer exciting opportunities for American students and teachers to connect with their Darfuri peers. In March 2011 we live-streamed a Darfuri school assembly which American schools were able to watch and submit questions during. Two high schools also won our School to School -- Face to Face Contest and live video-chats with their sister schools!
